Lullaby of Coney Island Avenue

April 7, 2006 By Jan Clausen

Under cloudy skies the color of her eyes,
Kumru walks her 10-speed, bitches:
Midwood feels like a Turkish village
stocked with fanatics of various faiths.

Kumru walks her 10-speed, bitches.
A neighbor asked was she from Holland.
Fanatics of various faiths
all pledge allegiance to SUV’s.

A neighbor asked was she from Holland,
thinking where there’s smoke there’s gravy–
she hadn’t pledged allegiance to SUV’s!
(Most people on bikes come bearing pizza.)

Where there’s smoke there’s gravy.
How does it last, this flimsy world
where people on bikes come bearing pizza?
Fire-breathing, lion-faced?

How long can it last, this flimsy world,
living like a tree to get so gnarled?
Fire-breathing, lion-faced.
Lap it up before it vanishes.

Living like a tree to get so gnarled,
Adwaitya (tortoise) died at 2.5 (centuries).
Lap it up before it vanishes:
thick soup of time.

Adwaitya (tortoise) died at 2.5 (centuries).
Wild field bracketed by access ramps.
Thick soup of time,
never get it back.

Wild field bracketed by access ramps,
that music going on without you.
Never get it back,
so let’s hit the hay.

That music going on without you,
goat-bodied, serpent-tailed.
Let’s hit the hay
although you can’t tell me why,

goat-bodied, serpent-tailed,
Midwood feels like a Turkish village.
No, you can’t tell me why
under skies the color of Kumru’s eyes.
